Unforgettable trip to Tanzania

AFRICA. The dream destination for many, including me. Thirty-three students from YCIS Hong Kong, Beijing, Chongqing and Shanghai spent a week in the beautiful country of Tanzania, in east Africa. We stayed in the second biggest city in Tanzania, called Arusha, and managed not only to sightsee, but also do community service that we will never forget.

Just like everyone imagines and dreams of doing, we were lucky enough to go on safaris. It was incredible at how close the animals were to our jeeps, how wild they were, and especially how beautiful they looked with their vivid colors, living in nature, unlike the lives animals live locked up in zoos. I was especially amazed by the lion which was feeding on the wildebeest it caught, because it really showed how spectacular nature really is.

As impressive as the safaris were, I felt that the best and most memorable part of our trip was our community service at three local schools. Whether it was the Jaffery School where they spoke English, or the Emusoi Girls' School where the only way we communicated was through smiling and laughing, or the boys school where we donated desks and chairs, it was an amazing experience.

Every single student we met was so sweet and welcoming that our language barrier wasn't a problem anymore. Being able to spend time with these less fortunate children, to take photos with them, to exchange emails with them, to play football with them, was all a great way to spread our love towards them. It gave us such an uplifting feeling to know that we were the reason for their smiles.

Looking at the state of some of those schools, it was inspiring to see how hard working the students were, and how much getting an education meant to them, no matter how much they have to sacrifice. The fact that many of them had to walk more than 10 kilometers a day, or even had to convert to another religion, all for education, was touching. This made me feel extremely spoilt, for most of the people in Tanzania seem so much happier, with less than I have. It is a great accomplishment for me, for I have made a difference.

This trip to Tanzania was an unforgettable experience and holds a lifelong memory for me.
