Winning words!

AT the beginning of October, Yew Chung International School of Shanghai's Chinese department was "hen gao xing" (very happy) to be contacted by the Shanghai Education Commission with an invitation for their students to participate in a poetry competition.

Not only was this a unique opportunity for YCIS Shanghai students to showcase their spoken Chinese skills, it was also the first time a competition of this kind was held in Shanghai.

Preparation time was short because the competition would be held in just two weeks, but the YCIS poets were up to the challenge.

After intense study, practice and rehearsals, the big day of the competition finally arrived.

On October 18, the YCIS students arrived at Shanghai Jincai Middle School, ready to perform, and what a performance it was. Set to traditional Chinese music, the students wore traditional costumes and performed choreographed gestures and body language as they delivered the poems. With the added contribution of a PowerPoint slide in the background, the focus was clearly not just to recite the poem, but to express it.

The students' intense rehearsal and depth of Chinese study paid off: For the Individual Section of the competition, Year 7 students Eduardo and Heidi won second prize for the Middle School level and Year 12 student Isabelle won third prize for High School level. For the High School Group Section, Year 10 students Basile, Jung Woo, Min Gyun, Jae Wook, Paula and Eve received the second prize for their groups' great performance.

This was a tremendous showing and reflection of the students' hard work and that of their dedicated teachers.
