2014 f1 revolution

Power

1.6-liter V6 turbo engines have replaced 2.4-liter normally aspirated V8 engines and a maximum of 15,000rpm is mandated. It is the first time turbo engines have been permitted in F1 since they were banned at the end of 1988. While the old V8s produced more than 750bhp, the 2014 units put out around 600bhp with additional power coming from Energy Recovery Systems. Due to the engine change, F1 cars are quieter in the new season, which has been criticized by many people including defending world champion Sebastian Vettel.

 Fuel

Fuel is now limited to 100kg per race. Previously fuel was unlimited, but teams typically used around 160kg per race. Changes require 30 percent improvement in engine efficiency.

 Exhaust

Last year, two exhaust tailpipes would blow air directly onto the rear tires. There is a single tailpipe this season which must be angled upwards to prevent the exhaust flow being used for aerodynamic effect.

 Rear wing

The previously legal lower beam wing has been outlawed and the main flap has become slightly shallower in profile. Support pillars, however, are allowed. The DRS slot is also bigger than in 2013.

 Front wing

Front wings are a little narrower for 2014 with the width reduced from 1.8 meters to 1.65 meters. This would significantly affect the airflow around the front wheels. Also front wings used to clip and puncture the tires on other cars, the new rules would minimize such incidents.

 Gearbox

Gearboxes have eight forward ratios — one more than 2013. Each team must nominate ahead of the season.

 Energy Recovery Systems (ERS)

From 2014, a larger proportion of each car’s power comes from ERS. As well as generating energy under braking, ERS units also generate power using waste heat from the engine’s turbocharger.

Decibel

Many people have complained that the new engines make less noise and thus make the races less exciting to watch. F1 chiefs agreed in Bahrain early this month that something needs to be done to increase the noise of the turbo engines.

Weight

To compensate for the increased weight of the 2014 power train, the car’s minimum weight has been increased from 642kg to 691kg.

Points

Double points will be awarded in the final race of the F1 season — Abu Dhabi for 2014 — in order to create more drama through the entire campaign.

New penalties

Race stewards will have the option to hand out five-second penalties for minor infringements. Additionally, any driver who earns 12 penalty points on their super-licence during a 12-month period will be banned for one race.
