Chinese spirit, Selangor style in new trophy
IN sport, the trophy is a symbol of honor and victory, and although few of us become champions we get as much fun as seeing it held high as the winner and supporters.
But we might also derive a certain amount of pride as the trophy is presented at the 2010 Formula One Chinese Grand Prix at Shanghai International Circuit this weekend.
It will come from seeing the new trophy designed for the event by Royal Selangor, Malaysia's leading pewter maker.
Unveiled last month, inspiration for the design came from Chinese mythology.
The pewter trophy looks like a feng huo lun (wheel of fire), which was a weapon used by Nezha, a deity in Chinese mythology who is often depicted flying with a wheel of fire under each foot. Nezha is known for his power and speed, which is what motor racing is all about. The fast-moving wheel with a touch of flame is iconic to the Chinese.
This stylish contemporary interpretation of a traditional symbol is crafted with sweeping lines and reflective surfaces, giving the wheel a kinetic energy. This in turn makes it appear to be constantly moving, a characteristic that is synonymous with the fast-paced, adrenalin-pumping Grand Prix motorsport.
The stylish ring is held aloft by a stylized flame, and mounted on a plinth inspired by classical furniture.
Royal Selangor's involvement with Formula One began in 1999 when it was first commissioned to design and make the trophy for the inaugural Formula 1 Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit.
Founded in 1885, Royal Selangor celebrates its 125th anniversary this year. The modest enterprise founded by the Yong family has weathered family feuds, world wars and economic turmoil.
