Classic cars and more at automobile museum
THE Shanghai Auto Museum has recently launched its new Collection Pavilion.
The pavilion adds to displays about the history, development and technology of the auto industry in China and worldwide.
Around 40 valuable vintage cars from the early 20th century to the 1970s are now on display. The exhibits of Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Benz, Citroen, Ferrari, BMW and provide insight into the evolution of the “motor wagon” into modern vehicles.
Visitors will be amazed at the elegant and artistic design of the Heine-Velox V12, which was made in 1921. The piano manufacturer Heine surprised many at the time with its luxurious car that had adjustable windows, a tilting dashboard and distinctive wooden bodywork. It cost up to US$20,000 and was the most expensive car at that time.
The Auburn 851SC had a strong design and strong engine. It was popular with movie stars, financiers and speed racers in the 1930s. However, the brand didn’t survive the Great Depression and vanished in 1937.
The Mercedes-Benz 300SL was produced in the 1950s and was regarded as a masterpiece of the German auto industry, a smart combination of speed and design with a streamlined body and doors that opened like bird wings.
The museum also presents exhibits of old gasoline pumps, fire extinguishers, portable oil carts, parking meters, vending machines, telephones and television sets. These items, along with background music by the Beatles, create a nostalgic ambience.
