What does a 1.6L V6 engine sound like?

MAJOR changes to the sport’s rules this year have led to the introduction of 1.6-liter V6 turbocharged engines with associated use of battery-stored power harvested from the kinetic energy generated by braking and the heat energy of exhaust.

Despite unfavorable feedback from F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone and defending champion Sebastian Vettel about the cars being too quiet, the difference is not so noticeable on television broadcasts. Fans will find out whether the reduced engine noise ruins the viewing experience this weekend.

The change from a V8 to V6 engine was in line with F1’s attempt to be more environmentally friendly. This also applies to new restrictions over fuel use. There is a limit of 100 kilograms of fuel per car. Usage is capped at a rate of 100 kilograms per hour. Thus, with races generally lasting between 90 minutes and two hours, much of the car’s power must come from stored power.
