Andy Summers to rock Qizhong during finals

There is another reason to hit the Qizhong Tennis Center for the final of the Shanghai Rolex Masters on October 13. The venue will rock with a live performance by Andy Summers, formerly with the UK rock band The Police.

Summers will be in the city promoting his new band Circa Zero, and Shanghai Rolex Masters’ Tournament Director Michael Luevano has roped him in for a quick show on the last day of the premier tennis event Ñ an unexpected treat.

“Andy and I became friends in 2012. He is a tennis fan and a player (two, three times a week), so when he told me about his new band Circa Zero I thought it would be a perfect matchup to do a couple of shows here in Shanghai. One performance right after the doubles final on the Heineken Live Stage,” Luevano said.

The men’s doubles starts at 2pm and organizers hope to heat up the atmosphere before the singles final, which is scheduled for 4:30pm.

Ticket-holders only

“This is exclusive to the ticket holders for the finals ... No tickets will be sold just for the show on October 13,” Luevano said.

Gates open at noon on Sunday.

“Andy’s new band Circa Zero is a rock band with great energy, catchy riffs (signature Andy!) and stellar vocals by Rob Gilles,” Luevano said. He saw their first show in July in Los Angeles.

“I’m sure the Shanghai fans will love this band,” he said.

Summers will play a few Police numbers in a show on October 10 at On Stage, and on October 13 on the Heineken Live Stage at the Shanghai Rolex Masters.

At the October 10 concert, the local band Tian will be in support.

Before The Police disbanded in 1986, ending “the biggest rock band in the world,” Summers won two Grammys for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. His innovative and signature tunes played as much a role in the band’s success as Sting’s songs and Stewart Copeland’s drumming.

He was voted the No. 1 pop guitarist for five years by Guitar Player Magazine and was inducted into the Guitar Player Hall of Fame.

Summers went his own way after the band split, reuniting for a world tour in 2007 which enjoyed enormous success.

In a career spanning over four decades, Summers has recorded numerous rock, jazz and New Age albums. His guitar skills were famous long before The Police became a household name. In a track for “The Animals,” Summers played a guitar solo lasting four minutes, 15 seconds — the longest on record at that time!
