City offers recreational opportunities

THE annual ATP Shanghai Rolex Masters, ongoing through October 12 at the Qizhong Tennis Center in Minhang District, is expected to draw bigger crowds this year, reflecting how tennis has become more and more popular.

Watching the world’s top-ranked players can spark a desire to play the game, which is a good way to stay in shape as the sport is a combination of aerobic and anaerobic exercises. You can play individually against a single opponent or with two teams of two players (doubles).

Here are some recommended tennis courts in Shanghai and some tips for those who want to get started playing tennis.

Qizhong Tennis Center

Want to play on the courts where the world-famous tennis players have competed? The Qizhong Tennis Center, site of the world-class tennis tournament, has first-class courts and support facilities. Covering an area of 339,000 square meters, the tennis center has 18 indoor and outdoor courts. The tennis arena was designed by Japanese architect Mitsuru Senda. It is in the shape of a magnolia, the city flower of Shanghai. The center court has a capacity of 15,000 spectators. There are 993 parking positions available.

Xianxia Tennis Center

In southwest Shanghai, Xianxia Tennis Center covers 19,950 square meters with eight tennis courts. There are four indoor and four outdoor courts. Among the indoor courts, one red clay court can cater to your dream of playing in the French Open. A professional coaching team offers lessons according to your level. Coach Li, who has over 24 years teaching experience, will focus on building the consistency of the game, working on all aspects including technical, tactical, physical and psychological. The center is open from 6am to 10pm. The indoor courts cost 80 yuan to 100 yuan per hour and 60 yuan for lights fee. The outdoor courts cost 40 yuan to 60 yuan per hour and 40 yuan for lights fee.

Yuanshen Tennis Center

As the third phase of Yuanshen Sports Center, the tennis courts cover an area of 10,900 square meters. There are 10 standard courts with PVC melinex tarpaulin forming the roof to keep the ventilation and lighting. Near the Lujiazui area and close to Metro Line 2 station, the tennis center has a perfect location and attracts lots of players. The evening section is very popular and a reservation is needed. Rackets and balls are available for rent, and you can also hire a professional coach. The shower, changing room and other facilities are also available.

Shanghai International Tennis Center

Hidden by the former French concession canopy, Shanghai International Tennis Center has four air-conditioned indoor courts, save for the whoosh and plop of well-formed volleys. Outside there are seven courts that were used for ATP Masters and WTA tournaments. Inside the Regal International East Asia Hotel, the tennis center requires a membership and it is very exclusive. The club offers tennis courses for every level, tennis team building for companies, and tennis matches and activities.

Tips

• Warm-up activities are required before practicing. After practice, you need to stretch your arms and legs to relax the muscles and avoid soreness.

• It’s recommended that beginners use bigger rackets to increase the probability of hitting the ball in the racket’s “sweet spot.”

• You can choose specialized tennis shoes with wide, flat soles for traction and a built-up front structure to avoid excess wear. Beginners should choose the soft-soled shoes.
