Tourney trophy devised by Chinese

This year’s trophy, like in the three years from 2009 to 2011, was made by the Malaysian pewter company Royal Selangor. The design, by Chinese product designer Jamy Yang, is meant to capture the spirit of this exciting tournament, according to Royal Selangor Executive Director Chen Tien Yue.

The trophy is shaped like a blooming magnolia flower, a reference to Qizhong Tennis Center, the official venue of the Shanghai Rolex Masters. The state-of-the-art stadium has a retractable roof made of eight stainless steel sections, deriving its shape from the magnolia flower, the official city flower of Shanghai. The trophy is made up of eight tall, angular pewter frames that stand on an octagonal base. To create contrast, the inner surface of the trophy was given a golden tint. When viewed from the top, the walnut wood base stands out against the brightly polished pewter frames. By incorporating the angular pewter frames and different color tones, the designer aims to create a trophy that’s not only comfortable to hold, but also beautiful and eye-catching with its many facets, Chen said.

It is the first time that Royal Selangor has worked with a Chinese designer on the trophy for the tennis tournament.
