Celebrity Bridesmaid Wedding 'Fun' Turns Controversial
A Chinese actor held his wedding ceremony in Bali Island on March 30. What should have been a story of fun and happiness aroused great controversy after a video of the function was shared online.
The groom Bao Bei'er invited Liu Yan, a famous Chinese star, to be one of the bridesmaids.
Liu Yan (second left) was invited to the wedding.
However, during the ceremony, he and other groomsmen played a 'trick' on Liu by almost throwing her into a pool.
A video recording posted online later on the same day spread across the Internet a day after the wedding.
The footage shows the groom and the groomsmen lifting Liu close to the pool.
Liu screamed for help.
Discussing where to throw, one man said the water is very shallow.
At that time, a bridesmaid showed up and tried to stop the horseplay.
The "heroine," Jia Ling, a comedian, pushed two men away.
But it didn't work. Some groomsmen were still pulling Liu's dress.
Jia sat down to protect Liu, but the groomsmen tried to push her away.
Liu was holding Jia tightly while all this went on.
Other bridesmaids soon joined her 'rescue.'
The horseplay eventually ended when Jia said red envelopes can solve the problem.
Meanwhile, Liu sat up and tidied up herself.
This matter ignited controversy online. Many netizens said the groom and groomsmen didn't respect the bridesmaid. They claimed there were no decent gentleman at the scene as no one tried to stop. Such rough behaviors at Chinese wedding have got condemned as abuses.
Some netizens, however, thought it to be just kidding and said "Don't be so serious!"
When media reporters contacted Liu, she didn't comment on this matter, nor did she confirm if it was just for fun.
According to Wuhan Morning Post, the agent of Liu said, "We believe the groomsmen didn't do it deliberately or to hurt. All of us are friends. Liu didn't reply because she doesn't want to hurt anyone."
Liu Yan, also known as Ada Liu, is a Chinese actress, hostess and singer.
Liu joined Guangdong Television to host television in 1999. The same year, she entered Communication University of China.
Liu first faced camera in 2008 and she was chosen to act as a support actor in Painted Skin, a film starring Zhao Wei, Chen Kun and Zhou Xun.
She won the "Best New Artist" at the 2nd Top Chinese Music Awards and the "Best Promising Host" at the 3rd Zongyi Award. In 2010, the Most Influencing Host of China named her on their list of the 10 Greatest hosts on TV.
