Primary School Math Question Goes Viral
An elementary school student’s answer to a math quiz question has gone viral.
The question was: “Mum brought home five cakes. How did she split it equally among four brothers?”
A student had an answer on the paper: “One piece for mum”.
The unexpected and not-quite-mathematical answer triggered Internet debate. Some netizens said they were touched by the answer although it went missed the point of the question:
Responses included:
“I'll be not willing to deduct marks if I were the teacher.”
“Although it went far from the question, it was the most humane answer. I'll give full marks and leave it up to the teacher.”
“Despite the math problem, the kid boasts a high IQ level and is quite good at handling problems.”
“I would be moved to tears if my child answered in this way”.
But another Web user said: “Although filial piety deserves appreciation, you should take math seriously.”
“Ethics education is different from mathematics and science education. Don't mislead students' thinking and decision-making on mathematics and science problems. “
“Teacher says, ‘This doesn’t conform with the standard answer; marks deducted.’ Exam-oriented education leaves out human sympathy.“
“Although the answer is very touching, I say the question itself is also not quite so rigorous if such an answer could happen.”
