Mahjong has long established itself as the quintessence of Chinese culture.

But have you seen Chinese students teaching their foreign teachers how to play Mahjong?

A netizen posted on Weibo photos of students tutoring their foreign teacher how to play Mahjong.

The foreigner sat beside a student at a Mahjong table with a set piled up neatly. The photos went viral online.

It happened during an oral-English lesson for freshmen on the afternoon of May 17 at Tianfu College of SWUFE in Sichuan Province, local news portal newssc.org reported.

The foreign teacher Mary from Kenya encouraged students to practice English speaking based on games. Students brought Mahjong in return, motivating Mary to give it a try.

The story was posted by a student surnamed Huang, who declined sharing participating students' details due to privacy concerns. Huang said that Mary was now quite familiar with the rules but needed practice.

Mary himself admired the lessons and considered it an inspiring method of practicing oral English that benefited students.

University official Zou Chenyi was unwilling to comment on the issue, though, confirmed the identity of the foreign teacher to the press.

Netizens complimented the unique method of boosting cultural communication.

Others viewed it as a way to practise oral English.

Indeed, some also found fault with it and commented that the teacher failed to take responsibility.
