44 Street Lamps in Just 140 Meters Taken Down After Controversy
A total of 44 street lamps that had been installed on a 140-meter road in a village in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province were removed on May 23.
A villager from Xiaoyanzhuang Village in Yanta District told the local Huashang Newspaper on May 22 that a road near a kindergarten in the village had been installed with many street lamps on both sides recently, saying it seemed to be wasteful.
Twenty-three of the 44 lamps were installed on the east side and the remaining 21 on the west side. The shortest distance between any two lamps was 2.2 meters, compared with the normal standard of 20m.
Sub-district office staff said the lamps were illegally installed privately by villagers and the department had now removed them.
An insider told the newspaper people who installed such solar lamps could get subsidies from the government. Additionally, this village will be relocated soon, so those who installed them could seek compensation for their removal.
The sub-district office said it was investigating the issue.
