Boy, 5, Tears up 50,000 yuan into Pieces When Home Alone

A five-year-old boy in Qingdao, Shandong Province tore up 50,000 yuan (US$7,255.70) in banknotes when he was left alone at home on May 20.

His father, surnamed Gao, were shocked to see the money he stored in a drawer, all 100-yuan notes, were torn into small pieces when he arrived at home.

He collected all the pieces and put them into a plastic bag before he took them to nearby banks for help.

However, he was told that if he wanted to exchange the damaged banknotes, he had to piece them back together first.

He tried, but found it difficult to realize the banks' request with such small pieces. "I tried very carefully to put them back together for two days, but could only repair a few of them. Some banknotes have been torn into three or four pieces and some into more than 10 pieces. It's too hard," he said. 

Gao told the media he "criticized" his son but stopped when he saw the boy's innocent look. "I couldn't tell him off more as he's just too young to understand."
