College Graduate's Choice of Business Raises Controversy

If you visit Songjiang University Town in Shanghai, you should not miss the most popular food there — a pancake filled with steamed pork with preserved vegetables, which is said to be bigger than a face, thinner than a paper and crispier than potato chips.

The shop’s owner, Liu Tao, started his business three years ago. Since then, there has always been a long line of people waiting to buy his pancakes.

Liu majored in International Trade from a college in Hunan. In his leisure time, he learnt to make pancake from a chef in Yiwu, east China's Zhejiang Province. After graduation, he opened his own pancake shop in Shanghai.

In the beginning, he would make more than 800 pancakes a day all by himself, right from preparing the stuffing to baking. Though he would get exhausted, he didn't give up.

With his efforts, the pancakes became increasingly popular among teachers and students. Many people thought he was a good example of entrepreneurship. “His success lies in his good and responsible attitude to consumers.”

But some people said making pancakes should not be the choice of a graduate. They felt college students should take advantage of their professional knowledge gained at the university and start a business associated with advanced technologies. "A pancake maker is just like a vendor. It's a waste of your skill and knowledge."
