Rats Turn Cash Into Trash

2016/03/24
Han Jing

An old man surnamed Li in southwest China’s Sichuan Province found his 9,200 yuan (US$1,415) of cash stocked between bricks bitten into pieces by mice.

Li brought the torn bills to a nearby bank for help.

Bank staff spent over five hours to reorganize the banknotes, according to West China Metropolis Daily.

However, they could put back only 59 banknotes worth 3,750 yuan in any worthwhile way.

This case is not the first of its kind.

A couple had their entire life's savings of 100,000 yuan (US$15,300) gone up in flames in a fire at their apartment in Shanghai’s Fengxian District during the Spring Festival holiday.

The blaze broke out on February 10, while the couple were away at work. The cash — mostly 100 and 20 yuan bills — was in a wardrobe that got badly damaged in the fire.

So what we've learned from the two cases are:

First, you should be very careful about how you save your cash.

However, in case some unfortunate events do happen, you should keep the following in mind:

1. Damaged banknotes which satisfy following conditions can be changed in full value.

  • The face value can be identified.
  • Three quarter and above remains.
  • Pattern and words can be linked as original.

2. Banknotes with half remnant or less than three quarters and those short of one-quarter in cross pattern can only get you half their value, as illustrated below.

3. Banknotes with damaged over half and indistinguishable face can’t be changed at all, as illustrated below.

Lessons Learned!
