A Chinese student, studying at Rutgers University in the United States, was hailed as a hero after she risked her life to protect her supervisor in a stabbing incident last month.

On November 4, a former student entered the office of the business school at the Livingston Campus and began attacking a professor.

Xiao Yaqing, who hails from Hunan Province’s Zhuzhou, was in the office when the incident happened. She immediately intervened to protect the professor.

Both Xiao and her supervisor were critically wounded and were rushed to a hospital where they were admitted in ICU.

The suspect, 25-year-old Joshua S. Thompson, of Mountainside has been charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon in connection with the crimes, Rutgers police said.

News of Xiao's bravery spread across the campus and university leaders, teachers and schoolmates visited her at the hospital with flowers, greeting cards, food and clothes.

Chinese students studying abroad posted “get well soon” messages for Xiao on the social media, with some saying "She is really an admirable girl for her courage and optimistic."

"She's the pride of our Chinese students!" proclaimed another.

Xiao also received a postcard with signatures of all business school professors.

The Hunan native is recovering from treatment and hopes to get back to her studies as soon as possible.
