鈥楬alf-priced鈥 Cold Drink Wins Warm Praise on the Internet
A random act of kindness from staff at a milk-tea shop in Chengdu, capital of the southwestern province of Sichuan, on a hot spring day has won widespread praise on the Internet after it was recorded by a patron.
A staffer offered a non-existent discount to a sanitation worker who came in on April 28 looking for the cheapest cold drink he could get. He was first told he could have a medium-sized cup of lemon tea for 6 yuan (US$0.87), which he hesitated over, but ordered.
Instead, he was offered a 50 percent discount to buy a full cup for just 4 yuan.
A Web user, “kimiamber,” witnessed the act of kindness as she waited for her matcha latte and detailed the incident on her Weibo account.
“Kimiamber” praised the staff’s compassion saying the act, much like a white lie, was even warmer than a free offer.
The shop manager surnamed He said there was actually no such discount in the shop, but he appreciated what his employees did, the Chengdu Business News reported.
The 53-year-old sanitation worker surnamed Jia was very grateful when someone told him what had actually happened, the report said.
Web users were full of praise for the shop staff for doing something kind for the man without making him feel uncomfortable or patronized.
