Man Makes Carving On Bricks And Sells Them At 200-500 Yuan Each

2016/07/05

In ancient times, the Chinese had developed different kinds of materials for carving.

Now, thanks to Yu Xilin, bricks have been listed among these materials.

Yu Xilin, 41, is from Baiyan Village, Jiahui Town, Gongcheng County in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. When he worked in Hunan Province, he met an artisan, who had mastered the art of carving on a stone bench. He then started to learn from him.

In 2015, he returned home to look after his sick mother. He found several old and discarded houses on the mountains in his hometown, with bricks scattered everywhere. It inspired Yu to put his learning into good use and he started carving.

Yu also got some help online.

To make a delicate work of art, knowledge of painting was essential. Yu made a copy of online pictures. He then started to carve them.

He created patterns on bricks with characters, animals and painting.

He made over 20 carvings on the bricks.

As people admired his works, Yu grew in confidence. He saw in the bricks a flavor of ancient simplicity. The bricks can be used as knick-knacks on tables and window ledges.

In June, he sold over 10 bricks online with prices ranging from 200 to 500 yuan. Once worthless the bricks are valuable.

Enjoying his newfound fame, Yu was being wooed by some established painters and calligraphers, who sent him some of their works. In return, Yu gifted them his work on bricks.
