Melons With Calligraphy Become Bestsellers
A teacher in Jiaxian County of Pingdingshan, central China’s Henan Province, wrote Chinese characters in calligraphy on watermelons, making them bestsellers and the latest Internet sensation.
Gu Xinliang, 56, wrote “福” (fortune) and “寿” (longevity) in calligraphy one day on two watermelons his family grew, and surprisingly these two melons were later sold very quickly.
Then Gu began to write auspicious phrases such as “double happiness,” “bringing in wealth and fortune” and “good luck” on melons. They soon became bestsellers.
A total of 3,000 kilograms of watermelons with calligraphy were sold out within 11 days.
Gu said he likes calligraphy since he was a child. He learned this ancient art from school and writes couplets for villagers on holidays and festivals.
