Police help Russian hitchhiker stranded on expressway
Local police came to the aid of a foreigner who was trying to get a lift from passing vehicles on the Hurong Expressway in Hubei Province on Saturday.
With the help of a translation software on his mobile phone, the foreigner told the police that he was a budget traveler from Russia and could only speak Russian. He told them he had already visited Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan and started his China trip in northwestern Xinjiang.
He hitchhiked to Xi’an and Beijing. On Friday, he took off for Guangzhou from Beijing but was dropped off halfway near the Zhongguanyi Service Area in Macheng. He looked for drivers for Guangzhou, when police caught up with him.
He planned to take a flight to Vietnam on July 13.
After discovering that the foreigner had only 120 yuan with him, a policeman offered to give him 100 yuan to buy a train ticket to Guangzhou. But the Russian rejected the offer and insisted on hitching a ride to the destination.
The cop helped him to find a ride to Guangzhou but also warned him not to hitchhike on the expressway.
