Senior High School Student Becomes Latest Internet Sensation
WU Yishu, a senior high school student from Shanghai, has become the latest Internet sensation for her remarkable ability to recite ancient Chinese poetry during a TV show “Chinese Poetry Conference” on February 1.
Born in 2001, Wu is a senior student at the High School Affiliated to Fudan University. Her knowledge of about 2,000 ancient Chinese poems has stunned the Internet. Web users commented that “Wu meets all the fantasy we have about a talented woman.”
She scored the highest mark when asked to come up with non-repetitive verses with Chinese character “鏈” in the cultural and educational program produced by science and education channel CCTV-10.
Jiang Wenye and Hou Youwen were the other two contestants from Shanghai in the program.
The city holds specialized poetry festival for residents during the annual Shanghai Citizens Art Festival. In Changning District, students are required to recite 150 classics when they graduate from elementary school, and high school students are required to recite poems of around 10,000 characters.
