‘Supermoon’ Lights Up the Sky Over the Guanque Tower
A “supermoon” lit up the sky over one of China’s four most famous towers, the Guanque Tower, last night in Yongji City of Shanxi Province.
Netizens were amazed by the photos of moonlight casting radiance and grandeur on the ancient tower at around 9pm.
The “supermoon” — a term used to describe a full moon at its perigee, or closest point to Earth during the lunar orbit — is the biggest and brightest moon to rise in almost 69 years. It won’t come this close to Earth again until November 25, 2034.
The Guanque Tower or Stork Tower, built in the Northern Zhou Dynasty (AD 557-581), gains its name as storks often perch over the tower.
The shining moonlight also added poetic touch to the Yingying Pagoda at Pujiu Temple, 7 kilometers away from Guanque Tower. The pagoda was named after Cui Yingying, the female protagonist in ancient Chinese romance classic “Romance of the Western Chamber.”
