Disapproval of a Student’s Leave Request Raises Controversy
A senior student from Qingdao University asked for leave to see his seriously ill, 72-year-old grandmother back in hometown, but was turned down by his teacher.
The student, surnamed Yu, posted his WeChat history on his Weibo on the evening of November 27, and soon triggered hot debate. Quite a few netizens blamed the teacher, who’s surnamed Cui, for being indifferent and unreasonable.
As the Wechat history showed, Cui told Yu to put more attention to study than “thinking of other things like life and death.” She said it would do some help to his grandma’s health if she knows he excels in his studies. She also said that 72 years of age can only be seen as middle age.
Cui said leave without approval would be considered as truancy.
Yu said the health condition of his grandmother who is suffering breast cancer has worsened recently. He bears strong affection to his grandmother as he was brought up by her before going to Qingdao for college.
Authorities from Qingdao University replied on their official Weibo account on Tuesday afternoon that they had already approved Yu’s leave after investigation. They also guaranteed that professional ethics and moral education will be enhanced among teachers in the future.
