Middle School Announcement Sparks Controversy
A middle school in Xi’an, capital of Shaanxi Province, has become the focus of Internet discussion following the announcement by the school authorities that they would crack down on improper contacts between male and female students.
Male and female students seen together “within 1.2 meters” will be considered “abnormal,” the Beijing Youth Daily reported, citing an unnamed grade two student.
It said the school considers “normal social distance” to be between 1.2m and 3.6m. Students, violating the code of conduct, will be hauled away by the scruff of the neck, it said.
The announcement led to denouncements by angry parents, students and netizens.
Local educational authorities acted on the rule following critical media reports, saying that it goes against the “healthy development of the students.”
