Ronald McDonald 'Arrested' By Guangzhou Chengguan Officers
A Ronald McDonald statue was forcibly dismantled by three chengguan (urban management officers) in Guangzhou, capital of south China’s Guangdong Province, on April 10.
Photos of the statue being taken away by passers-by went viral recently.
In the picture, the officers ripped off the Ronald McDonald figure from its base, leaving only his red shoes behind.
Chinese netizens showed their great concern towards the "clown".
Users on the popular social media platform Sina Weibo asked questions like: "Are you OK?" and "Why are you taken away?"
Someone also wondered why chengguan arrested Ronald McDonald but not Colonel Sanders...
According to the Yangcheng Evening News, the statue belongs to the McDonald's on Longzhu Street in Huadu District.
The city official had warned the operators of the store several times to remove the illegal outdoor advertising from the sidewalk.
"It was hindering pedestrian traffic," said an employee at the government sub-district office.
However, the staff of the store didn't cooperate.
On that day, the officers had to take away the illegal outdoor billboard citing reasons of city's appearance and environment.
When the manager of the McDonald's came out, he questioned, "Why not take away the Ronald McDonald statue in the doorway of the store? It's also on the sidewalk."
Then the chengguan carried away the statue.
"If the McDonald's staff admit their mistake and accept the punishment, they can have the statue back," the police officer explained.
