Bangkok suspends elevated rail service
THAI authorities have suspended service of Bangkok's elevated mass transit system amid reports that anti-government protesters placed tires on the tracks at one of the stations.
Troops armed with automatic weapons were sent into city streets early today and guarded Skytrain stations. The popular mass transit system was closed before morning service started, causing commuter chaos.
Government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn said that security forces were trying to negotiate with protesters at the Chidlom station where preliminary reports suggested they "put certain material on the rail."
Thai media reported that protesters placed tires on the tracks.
Panitan said "it may take time" before service is running again.
