Children and women lost in boat capsize
AN overcrowded boat carrying mostly women and children capsized in a river in eastern Nepal yesterday, killing two people and leaving dozens missing.
More than 50 people were believed on board the boat and only 14 were rescued from the Saptakosi river, about 400 kilometers southeast of the capital Katmandu, government official Durga Bhandari said.
Bhandari said two bodies were pulled from the water.
Police and local fishermen were searching for survivors but fog and cold weather was making their work difficult, Bhandari said.
Most of the people on the boat were women and children, according to Bhandari.
He said it was unclear how many people were actually on board because survivors were giving conflicting reports.
Travel by boat has become necessary because many roads and bridges in the area were damaged by flooding during the monsoon season.
