AN early-morning house fire killed three adults and two children in the US capital of Washington D. C., yesterday, local authorities said.

"This is a monumental tragedy," said D.C. Fire Department spokesman Alan Etter, adding that four others were injured.

Authorities received reports of fire early in the morning and when firefighters arrived at the scene, they found heavy fire and smoke engulfing a two-story house in northeastern part of the city.

Two children killed by the blaze were a 5-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy.

The adult victims were a 22-year-old woman, a 23-year-old man and a 72-year-old man.

Among the injured, a 11-year-old boy is in grave condition and has low chance of surviving.

Three others, a 41-year-old woman, a 44-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

About 120 firefighters battled the blaze, authorities said.
