Paula strengthens into hurricane off Mexican coast
TROPICAL Storm Paula strengthened into a hurricane today as it moved northwest toward Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, the US National Hurricane Center said.
Paula, the 16th named storm of the busy 2010 Atlantic hurricane season and the ninth hurricane, was packing top sustained winds of 75 miles (120 km) per hour, making it a Category 1 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of intensity.
At about 5 a.m. EDT (0900 GMT), Paula was located about 230 miles (370 km) south/southeast of Cozumel, Mexico, the hurricane center said.
On the forecasted track, the center of Paula was expected to approach the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula on Tuesday night and Wednesday, it said.
A hurricane warning was in effect from Punta Gruesa northward to Cabo Catoche and included the popular resort of Cancun. A tropical storm warning was also in effect for the coast of Honduras along the border with Nicaragua.
Paula was expected to bring heavy rains in eastern Honduras, parts of the Yucatan peninsula, and possibly in mountainous areas of Nicaragua and Honduras, threatening flash floods and mudslides, the center said.
The six-month Atlantic hurricane season, which ends on Nov. 30, has produced five major hurricanes this year. The United States has so far escaped a significant landfall.
On Monday, Paula as a tropical storm produced high winds that knocked over trees and rains that swept away several wooden houses in remote Honduran coastal towns. Small mudslides blocked some roads, but there were no reports of injuries or deaths, Honduran newspaper La Prensa said on its website.
