'Titans' claims box office No. 1 in final tally

"CLASH of the Titans" won the hotly-contested No.1 spot at North American box offices last weekend, beating the new Tina Fey comedy "Date Night" and reversing the order from early estimates, according to final data released yesterday.

Sunday's estimates had suggested that "Date Night" held a slim margin over "Clash of the Titans," but those projections had been disputed by some studios.

According to final figures released on Monday, the romantic comedy "Date Night," released by 20th Century Fox, had a weekend gross of US$25.2 million, compared to US$26.6 million for the epic adventure "Clash of the Titans" from Warner Bros.

On Sunday, box office watchers estimated "Date Night" would end the weekend with US$27.1 million and "Clash of the Titans with US$26.9 million.

The Sunday component of the Friday-Sunday weekend used by studios to compile ticket sales figures is particularly open to revision since the studios release their three-day estimates early on Sunday morning.

The final figures gave "Clash of the Titans" -- the latest action film to jump on the lucrative 3D bandwagon after the success of "Avatar" -- a second week atop box office charts. The movie has grossed US$110.2 million in its first 10 days.

"Date Night" stars "30 Rock" star Fey and Steve Carell of TV sitcom "The Office" as a suburban couple pursued by crooks in a case of mistaken identity. Its ticket sales came in lower than expected at screenings on Sunday.

20th Century Fox is a unit of News Corp and Warner Bros is a unit of Time Warner Inc.
