District is putting on quite a show of activities for tourism festival

Minhang District is contributing its own special activities to the Shanghai Tourism Festival and beyond this year, with some 40 events marking the annual popular event.

The Minhang Tourism Festival, which ends on October 15, includes International Family Day on September 20-22 in Huacao Town. After three years’ running, the event has become a major part of seasonal festivities, with families invited to come together for games and sports.

An outdoor concert and parade also highlight festivities for the festival.

The popular biking tour around Minhang will be held on September 21. It’s an activity designed to enhance the district’s international outlook to the many foreigners who come to the festival.

More than 62 culturally diverse performances from more than 20 countries form the playbill of this year’s Hongqiao Hub World Music Asia Festival, which ends on September 24. The festival is designed as a cross-cultural exchange between China and the rest of the world. Grammy Award-winning French band Deep Forest is among the acts in the performance line-up.

Pujiang Country Park was recently named a Grade 4A tourist attraction. The park, which has attracted more than 4 million tourists in two years, plays a key role in festival activities.

The autumn flower show on display there now has turned the park into a floral fairyland. In front of the park’s bloom-covered castle is a pink flower carpet as big as almost four football fields. The show will run through November 24.

Part of the flower show features an event jointly sponsored with Saint John Tin Toys, a Hong Kong brand. It is designed to evoke childhood memories of gardens and includes some 50 private toy collections in the exhibition hall. There is a special section for people to donate toys to needy children.

And the fun doesn’t stop there. Japanese cartoon hero Altman performs in a children’s theater from October 1-7 in the park, as well as other popular figures like Garfield and Jimbo.

Evenings host outdoor events, including one where participants are encouraged to wear traditional Chinese clothing. There is also a forest light show.

The Altamira Shanghai Guitar Festival will be in Pujiang Country Park on October 6-8. Last year, the event attracted about 500 players, including guitarists David Russell and David Starobin. Argentine musician Roberto Aussel made his China debut at the festival.

The Minhang Tourism Festival is part of the 30th annual Shanghai Tourism Festival, which features some 100 events across the city this year. Major tourist attractions across Shanghai offer half-price discounts during the festival, and hotels and bed and breakfasts also reduce room rates.
