In Shanghai, there exists a type of old house that predates the shikumen (stone-gated neighborhoods). These houses, known as jiaoquan houses, are frequently seen in the countryside. In Minhang District’s Duhang Old Street, such architecture has been preserved, featuring a yard in the center with other houses linked to form a circle.
