Mei-school Peking Operas
CELEBRATED Peking Opera artist Wei Haimin, disciple of the late Mei-school artist Mei Baojiu, will stage three classic performances adapted from “A Dream of Red Mansions” and “The Golden Cangue.”
The shows will feature the distinctive Mei-school vocal art. Wei will also incorporate her own innovations on the art into the plays.
The performances are part of the Shanghai Oriental Art Center’s 2017 festival of classic, modern and experimental productions. Now in its 10th year, the festival will run from March 17 to April 29.
A total of 23 performances covering various opera styles — including Peking, Kunqu, Yueju, Huangmei, pingtan and Shanghai farce — will be staged.
