Peking Opera preserving a cultural legacy

Hou Yu from Beijing Peking Opera Troupe will stage two performances today and tomorrow during the 21st China Shanghai International Arts Festival.

The two performances — “Heroines of the Yangs” and a show of classic excerpts from laodan (old female roles in Peking Opera) — will also be a joint effort between Hou and Shanghai Peking Opera Troupe.

Born in 1988, Hou’s affinity with Peking Opera began when she was only 3 years old, thanks to the influence of her family.

A graduate of National Academy of Chinese Theater Arts, Hou is known for her impressive vocal and natural acting on stage.

“Heroines of the Yangs” features lavish scenes and marital arts elements to depict the heroic story of female heroes in ancient China.

Classic excerpts “Plunder of the Treasury” and “Meeting the Queen & Beating the Dragon Robe” have been interpreted and polished by Hou on stage for many years.

“It is our responsibility to preserve the classic plays of traditional theater,” said Hou.

“China has such a brilliant culture. The Chinese culture and philosophy are also demonstrated in the plays.”

She hopes to bring more young audiences to the traditional theaters.
