West End musical ‘The Choir of Man’ makes its China debut

THE West End musical “The Choir of Man” made its China debut last week at the JUCE Shanghai Centre Theater, transforming the venue into a community pub complete with beer, music and heartfelt stories.

Since its debut at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2017, “The Choir of Man” has received nominations for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy in 2022 for its infectious style, as well as the Daegu International Music Festival Award.

Andrew Kay and Nic Doodson co-created and produced the musical, which boasts rousing pop tunes, a vivid cast of characters, and heartwarming stories.

The vocalists were as proficient with their musical instruments as with their singing capabilities, besides being top tap dancers.

They play a wide range of roles, including a jobless laborer, a reticent poet, a young man seeking love, and a veteran weathered by life’s trials.

Their personal problems and inner ideas come together at “The Jungle,” an Irish pub. As Doodson stated, “We aimed to break the stereotype that men must always be strong – they can be vulnerable, write poetry, and express their feelings through songs.”

What’s most unique about “The Choir of Man” is that the audience can bring the beer or drinks they received before the show into the venue, perfectly recreating the laid-back vibe of the musical’s West End performances.

The entire show is filled with audience interaction. Whether you’re a fan of live bands, jazz, folk music or a cappella, everyone can find their own delights in the performance.
