Exhibit pays tribute to timeless toy
YOU may not recognize the name Erno Rubik, but you almost certainly know the toy that bears his name: The Rubik’s Cube.
Invented in 1974, it’s estimated that one in every seven people on earth has played with this fun, fascinating and sometimes frustrating three-dimensional puzzle game.
Recently, the 72-year-old inventor was in town for the opening of an exhibition titled “Beyond Rubik’s Cube” at Shanghai Global Harbor Museum.
In celebration of the toy’s 40th anniversary, “Beyond Rubik’s Cube” was created by Liberty Science Center with Google and Rubik himself. The exhibition focuses on the cube’s influence on science, technology, visual art, music, film and architecture.
Most of the exhibits combine interactive physical and digital challenges with other artifacts to create a unique experience for visitors. The show is also a great way to inspire young people by introducing them to this timeless game.
“Knowledge is heavy. Sometimes it’s limiting to have new ideas. That’s the problem of old schooling, because it teaches answers. I believe questions are more important than answers,” Rubik said at the opening.
And Rubik’s Cube was created as a question to be solved.
There is a “Solve Bar” that welcomes cubers of all skill levels and provides animated instructions for conquering the Cube.
The spotlight at the exhibition is “Masterpiece Cube,” a cube made with 18-karat gold, white diamonds, red rubies, green emeralds, purple amethysts, and blue and yellow sapphires. It is the world’s most expensive toy, estimated to be worth US$2.5 million. It was created by a Rubik’s Cube fan in 1995.
During the three-month exhibition in Shanghai, a series of activities and workshops will also be held. These include tutoring sessions with Rubik’s Cube masters, a Christmas-themed event called “Cube Carnival,” an architecture workshop and food events.
