Flamenco legends prepare gala show

FLAMENCO is well loved by audiences around the world for the passion it ignites on stage.
In March, acclaimed flamenco dancer and choreographer Angel Rojas will direct “Gala Flamenca” at Shanghai’s Daning Theatre. The performance will bring to the city four of the world’s most celebrated flamenco dancers and choreographers: Antonio Canales, Carlos Rodriguez, Karime Amaya and Jesus Carmona.
Born in 1961 in Seville, Canales studied at the Spanish National Ballet and danced as a soloist before moving to Paris where he joined the company of Maguy Marin. Canales has received many awards including the Medal of Andalusia for best dance performer in 1999 and the Spanish National Award of Dance in 1995.
Also a choreographer, he created his own company in 1992. In the last few years Canales has worked in Guanajuato, Mexico. He has taught at the Theatre of Madrid while touring in Europe and North America.
Rodriguez was born in Madrid in 1975 and danced with Ballet Teatro Espanol. In 1995 he and Rojas created the company Nuevo Ballet Espanol.
Amaya comes from a family deeply rooted in the flamenco tradition. As the grand niece of the legendary flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya and daughter of bailaora Mercedes Amaya and guitarist Santiago Aguilar, she debuted in her parents’ troupe at the age of nine.
Amaya has performed alongside great flamenco dancers such as Farruquito, Maria Pages, Manuela Carrasco and Rafael del Carmen.
In 2013 she embarked on a world tour of “Abolengo,” a production showcasing the meeting of the Farruco and Amaya families on the flamenco dance stage.
