French duo enrich classic cartoon

A LIVE concert-film adapted from the classic Czech cartoon “The Little Mole” will be performed at Minsheng Art Museum on Saturday night. The performance will be followed by a musical workshop with the show’s creators, French singer-songwriter Ollivier Leroy and percussionist Pierre-Yves Prothais.

The concert-film was first produced in 2007, simultaneous to the big-screen release of “The Little Mole’s New Adventure.” Leroy and Prothais were offered an opportunity to create a concert-film based on four episodes from the cartoon.

“It is a double pleasure of visual imagery and live music: a feast for all children’s souls,” say organizers, the French Alliance of Shanghai, a language and cultural organization promoting Franco-Chinese exchange since 1992.

Simple and colorful, “The Little Mole” was created in the 1950s and today the film’s titular character is widely considered the most popular Czech cartoon creation.

Since 2000, Leroy and Prothais have been composing and performing original music over short- and medium-length films made between 1905 and the present day.

Skillfully mixing compositions and sound effects, the two artists enrich the animated pictures with a contemporary, dream-like sound atmosphere.

With percussion, harmonium and vocalization, Leroy and Prothais create a nuanced universe of world music, rock and roll, and classical sounds. Pushing experimentation and composition, the two musicians accompany the film’s acoustic score with sounds from the Vietnamese mouth harp, metal blades in water, arranged flutes, shells and many other unconventional instruments.
