Giants of Chinese modern art celebrated in show

SEVERAL of the most celebrated names in China’s modern art history are featured in one of Shanghai’s biggest exhibitions this year.
“De L’est A Paris, Trans-Orient-Occident, Les Artists Chinois en France,” an exhibition in two parts, displays offerings from eight veteran artists and eight fresh graduates at Liu Haisu Art Museum.
The museum is showcasing for the first time paintings created by Zao Wou-Ki (1921-2013), Chu Teh-Chun (1920-2014), Wu Guanzhong (1919-2010) and Francois Cheng in one exhibit. The four were all members of the College de France.
Also on display are masterpieces of Liu Haisu (1896-1994), Lin Fengmian (1900-91), Xu Beihong (1895-1953) and Pan Yuliang (1895-1977), a prominent female artist in her time.
The exhibition features not only these great artists’ paintings but also some related historical materials.
“They really experienced cultural collision between the East and the West in art, philosophy and tradition, and went beyond the self-limitation and reached a higher level,” said Jin Wenyi, deputy director of the museum and one of the exhibition's curators.
The second part of the exhibit focuses on today’s young artists under a globalization trend. Their works vary from installation, video, photography, canvas to new media and performance, showing their efforts in pursuing a more globalized art language.
