Air pollution warning for city residents

SHANGHAI’S elderly residents, children and anyone with a heart or lung problems should stay indoors today as the air will be heavily polluted, the city’s environmental authorities said yesterday.

The air quality index is expected to be between 260 and 280 this morning, “heavily polluted,” and fall to between 190 and 210 from 12pm to 8pm, or “moderately to heavily polluted,” according to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center.

Static weather conditions are doing little to disperse the pollution and its density, especially of the tiny PM2.5 particles that are especially dangerous, is increasing, the center said.

Yesterday, the density of PM2.5 particles was more than seven times higher than the level considered safe by the World Health Organization.

The air quality index began to rise from “slightly polluted” at 7am yesterday and had reached 228 by 1pm.

“Moderate” smog which blanketed the city yesterday is expected to continue this morning, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said. It issued a yellow haze alert, the lowest of three levels, at 2:43pm.

The density of PM2.5 particles peaked at 178.3 micrograms per cubic meter at 1pm, compared with the safety guideline of 25 micrograms set by the WHO.

At 6pm, the AQI remained high, at 220, with the density of PM2.5 at 168.8 micrograms per cubic meter.

The downtown Jing’an District monitoring station and Chuansha station in the Pudong New Area reported the poorest air quality, with their AQI hitting 238 and 286 at 10pm.

This weekend will be sunny and cloudy with a high temperature of 13 degrees Celsius, compared with yesterday’s 10.6 degrees, the city’s weather bureau said.

The lowest temperature will be around 3 degrees Celsius today.

On Monday, temperatures will range between 5 and 9 degrees Celsius.

Cloudy to overcast weather is predicted for both Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures will be between 6 and 11 degrees on Tuesday, and on Wednesday it will be just 1 degree higher.
