New flagship bookstore to be unveiled

SHANGHAI'S Xinhua Bookstore launched a series of events including seminars and photo exhibition to celebrate the national bookstore brand's 80th anniversary this week.

China's first Xinhua Bookstore was set up on April 24, 1937, in Yanan, northwestern Shaanxi Province and the bookstores have spread nationwide since then.

With many readers resorting to buy books online, the city's Xinhua Bookstore chain is taking moves to upgrade its outlets to meet new demands of the city's readers.

According to the bookstore company, a new outlet called Space of Light on Wuzhong Road, designed by Japanese renowned architect Tadao Ando, is to be unveiled this fall. The outlet, covering an area of nearly 4,000 square meters, features both bookstore and art museum to serve as a complex space of culture and art. Light, as an important element in Ando’s other works, will also play an important element in the project.

The company added it is studying plans to build up more themed bookstore outlets to supplement the old professional bookstores.
