Photo studio offered 2nd lease on life

"MAGIC Studio," a popular photo workshop closed due to rising costs late in November, may open again amid locals' passion for it.

The studio owner, Chen Zhongqun, said that Hongkou District government officials had invited him to relocate his studio to a creative zone - Shanghai Music Valley Cultural Creative Industry Zone - after learning about his predicament.

The creative zone would likely bring more customers to Chen because its location is superior to his previous store on a small street. Moreover, Chen has been told that cheap rents may be offered to him to support his business.

Meanwhile, lots of photographers have contacted him to propose cooperation or with offers to buy his store.

Some photo studios invited Chen to work as their consultant after he closed his store.

Many people regretted the time-honored brand disappearing from the city. The store has been extremely popular among job seekers for Chen's outstanding cosmetic photography skills.

But Chen hesitates about whether to accept the government help because he is not very optimistic about the future of photo studios, thanks to rising labor costs and the prevalence of digital cameras and photo-editing software.
