Poetic TCM charms cast a spell on school kids
Kids of today got their first taste of the ancient charm of traditional Chinese medicine in the run-up to the 26th World Book Day on Friday.
Yesterday, about 40 students from the Jing鈥檃n District Zhabei No. 3 Central Primary School discovered two important Chinese medical texts 鈥 鈥淭angtou Gejue鈥 (Prescriptions in Rhyme) and 鈥淗uangdi Neijing鈥 (Yellow Emperor鈥檚 Internal Classic) 鈥 at a reading event co-organized with the TCM pharmacy chain Lei Yun Shang West.
鈥淭angtou Gejue,鈥 first published in 1694, is a compilation of more than 300 TCM prescriptions written in style of poems so as to appear catchy and approachable.
And 鈥淗uangdi Neijing鈥 is the greatest and earliest Chinese medical classic. It was compiled over 2,000 years ago, and yet it is still used as a fundamental medical text for today鈥檚 TCM practitioners. A woodblock-printed version, known as the earliest and the best-preserved extant version, has been included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.
Wu Songwei from Lei Yun Shang West taught the pupils to read aloud one of the most popular poems from 鈥淭angtou Gejue.鈥
The poem only has 42 characters in six lines. But it mentions four prescriptions simply using eight herbs, which dazzled everyone present.
Four of the herbs 鈥 dangshen (codonopsis pilosula), fuling (poria cocos), baizhu (atractylodis macrocephalae rhizome) and zhigancao (licorice processed with honey) 鈥 were displayed, allowing pupils to touch and smell them.
鈥淭CM is amazing,鈥 said grade-3 student Pan Xinyu.
These four herbs form an ancient therapy to treat stomach problems. By adding banxia (pinellia tuber) and chenpi (sun-dried tangerine peel), it turns into a new prescription to reduce phlegm, he said.
Wu also interpreted the complicated TCM theories from 鈥淗uangdi Neijing鈥 lucidly and distilled experiences of how ancient Chinese people kept healthy into pithy tips. Every pupil got a calligraphy practice sheet printed with the tips to improve their understanding as well as calligraphy.
鈥淭here are so many thing in traditional Chinese culture to explore,鈥 Pan said.
鈥淚t鈥檚 our first attempt to promote TCM to campus this year,鈥 Wu said. 鈥淲e hope to make TCM approachable to children and raise their interests in traditional Chinese culture.鈥
Teacher Chen Laixiu said the school welcomes informative and entertaining activities.
Lei Yun Shang West, now headquartered in Jing鈥檃n, has a history dating back 350 years. In recent years, it has held a variety of activities to promote TCM culture to all walks of life, such inviting local and overseas students to make their own herbal sachets at its flagship store on Huashan Road.
