Festival fireworks features shows of 6 nations

PYROTECHNIC artists from Malaysia, Australia, Mexico, Germany, the United States and China will present three fireworks extravaganzas at Century Park in the Pudong New Area as part of this year’s Shanghai Tourism Festival, park operators said today.

The fireworks displays will be held at 7:30pm on the nights of September 30, October 3 and October 6, each lasting 60 minutes.

In the first show, Malaysian pyrotechnic artists will display the culture and tradition of the country, accompanied with lively tunes. Then, the Chinese show will use the theme “dream world,” which will bring audiences to a beautiful lotus pond and prairie and feature splendid colors and amazing shapes. It will start with traditional tunes that will remind people of the Silk Road.

The second show will feature a splash of colors in the first half of performance from Australian artists. The designer Stuart Bensley has 17 years of fireworks design experience and he drew inspiration from the natural landscape of Australia — and there will be rainbows, colorful fish, fallen leaves, jellyfish, waterfalls, pine trees and snowflakes. The Mexican show will use 137 varieties of fireworks, which will show sorrow, joy, dance, love and death. Beautiful peonies and chrysanthemums will open in the sky amid traditional Mexican music.

In the third show, German artists will present a show with the theme “romance of fireworks,” with piano and opera music, while the US artists will pay tribute to rock music in the 1980s on October 6.

About 100 households with a hearing-impaired family member will be invited to enjoy the fireworks shows for the first time.

The Shanghai International Fireworks Festival has been held in the park for 13 years and is a highlight of the city celebration.

Tickets for standing room cost 70 yuan (US$11.20) each; tickets for seating cost 260 yuan.
