Yan’an Road Tunnel reopens to vehicles

THE Yan’an Road E. Tunnel reopened to traffic yesterday after a nine-month renovation, the city’s road traffic authority said.

The tunnel is one of the city’s busiest passages under the Huangpu River .

It has had its lighting and ventilation systems upgraded, and a new fire alarm and sprinkler system has been installed, the Shanghai Road Administration Bureau said.

“Engineers shifted from the former transverse ventilation system into the current longitudinal directions,” an official with the bureau said.

A total of 16 electric fans will be used to exhaust waste air. There used to be 32 such fans in the tunnel, the official said.

LED lamps were installed on the top of the tunnel to make it brighter, the bureau said.

The tunnel also has an extra escape passage, taking the total to five.

Work on the northern section started in February and finished in mid-August, while a three-month program of work on the southern section of the tunnel was completed middle this month, slightly ahead of schedule.

The city has 20 tunnels that run under the Huangpu and Yangtze rivers, and Suzhou Creek.
