Alert over Australian weight-loss products
SLIMMERS have been told to be on the lookout for four weight-loss products recently recalled in Australia for containing sibutramine - a substance similar to amphetamines.
Three brands of coffee and a jelly product marketed as slimming food could lead to heart attacks or strokes in overweight people, according to the New South Wales Food Authority.
These include Leptin Green Coffee 800, Leptin Slimming Coffee, Lose Weight Coffee and MyLeptin Weight Loss Jelly.
Consumers can purchase the products on Taobao.com, the country's leading e-commerce platform.
"Adding medication to food is banned," said Du Bing, an official at Shanghai Food and Drug Administration. "We will keep an eye on the case."
In China, Guangzhou Weixiao Biological Chemical Co Ltd told Shanghai Daily that it has been granted a manufacturing license by American parent firm Leptin.
However, the Chinese company claims its products do not contain illegal substances.
"The products sold in this country are different from the products sold in Australia," said a sales worker surnamed Ma. "The Chinese products do not contain the illegal substance and have passed domestic food tests."
Consumers are advised to check where the product was manufactured.
