Xuhui ‘Dream Center’ inches closer to reality

UNITED States-based film giant DreamWorks Animation and its Shanghai-based joint venture partners yesterday announced details of their “Dream Center” project in Xuhui District.
According to the district government, the culture and entertainment complex, which is set to open in 2017, will feature a host of theaters, shops, restaurants, bars and hotels.
Built along the Huangpu River, it will also be the flagship attraction of the West Bank Media Port area and is expected to see 20 million visitors a year.
Covering 463,000 square meters, the center will comprise 12 cultural venues with performance centers, concert halls and studios. Movie premieres and red carpet events will be held at a 500-seat IMAX cinema on the site.
The area will also host the headquarters of Oriental DreamWorks, another joint venture between Shanghai firms and the US film company.
Li Ruigang, chairman of China Media Capital, which leads the venture, said: “We believe the center will be a focal point for talent and a driving force for the cultural and creative industries.”
Oriental DreamWorks, which will employ up to 2,000 production professionals, plans to release between one and three films a year following its first debut production in 2017.
The studio will also co-produce “Kung Fu Panda 3,” the long-awaited third installment of the blockbuster franchise that’s set to hit screens in 2016.
