Robot farming is food for thought
In a greenhouse, a white robot moves between rows of greenery while data about the plants is gathered and fed back to a control room.
The robot was put to use in southeast China鈥檚 Fujian Province and unlike many other agricultural robots, this one is 5G-enabled.
That means the real-time picture and video transmission has super low latency, which allows the data gathered from the robot鈥檚 various sensors to be analyzed by AI more efficiently.
With a cartoonish look, the robot has a round base with wheels, allowing it to move in all directions.
It can be used for automatic inspection and data sampling.
Since 2013, China has been the world鈥檚 largest market for industrial robot applications.
The country believes robot applications can alleviate the pressure from rising labor costs and lead to more high-quality development.
Developed by Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Fujian Newland Era Hi-Tech Co Ltd, the robot is part of their efforts to build 鈥淎utonomous running farms,鈥 according to Zhao Jian, deputy head of the digital agriculture institute of FAAS.
The head of the robot is fixed with two 5-megapixel cameras as the 鈥渆yes鈥 and two 7-megapixel cameras as its 鈥渆ars,鈥 Zhao said.
Sensors to detect wind velocity, carbon dioxide levels, humidity and temperature are also situated at the top of its head and mouth.
鈥淗igh-quality data gathering is just the first step,鈥 said Zheng Peiqiang, general manager of Newland. 鈥淚t serves as the foundation for more AI applications.鈥
With AI algorithms that are being developed by the team, the agricultural robot can use the data to determine the plants鈥 health condition, pest control conditions, or even pick fruit with a bionic hand in the future, Zheng said.
The robot has been connected to 5G signals from telecommunication operator China Unicom for tests since last week.
鈥淭he ultimate goal is 鈥榤anless farms鈥,鈥 said Zhao.
鈥淲e expect the robot to be deeply integrated into the entire agricultural process, even helping people make management decisions.鈥
