Xinjiang teachers fight West鈥檚 smears
Officials and teachers in northwest China鈥檚 Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have debunked claims of 鈥渇orced boarding鈥 of ethnic minority students by sharing their stories and views on local education.
Elijan Anayat, a spokesperson for the Xinjiang regional government, said on Sunday some United States and other Western anti-China forces have fabricated lies of 鈥渇orced boarding鈥 of students in Xinjiang in an attempt to smear the region and find excuses for 鈥渦sing Xinjiang to contain China.鈥
Mirgul Maimaitimin, a local elementary school teacher, said that it is entirely up to the students and their parents to decide whether they will attend boarding school.
鈥淧arents can visit their children any time in the school, while students spend weekends, summer and winter vacations at home with their parents,鈥 she said. 鈥淭here is no such thing as 鈥榝orced boarding.鈥欌
She said the schools provide a good learning and living environment.
Tusungul Turdi, a kindergarten teacher from Akto County whose daughter is at a secondary school, said her students and her daughter all benefit a lot from Xinjiang鈥檚 free education that also covers boarding schools.
鈥淚 am glad to see my child grow up happily,鈥 she said.
鈥淏oarding schools in Xinjiang are no different from those in other areas of the world,鈥 Elijan Anayat said.
